Jennifer Joseph, owner of Natural Magics, sits in a single window lit garage in Denver drilling into a crystal stone made out of labradorite for a sale she’s going to post to her Instagram stories. I was watching her eyes carefully determine what part of the stone needed to be drilled while the water keeping the dust to a minimum fall down her tattooed fingers. Afterwards, she took off her shop flannel and sat in the lawn chair outside of her work space to take a break.

The labradorite that was once raw is now carved with holes which will become a crystal pipe to create a more connected smoking experience.

FF: "You’re from Texas; why Denver? What inspiration does Denver provide you when making your pieces?"  JJ: "There were a lot of factors in my first move to Denver but it was mostly because Cannabis is legal and I didn't want to be considered a criminal because the plant I work with most is illegal where I live. I left Denver to travel for a bit and went back to Texas for a year but I came back here for the incredible female relationships and community I had built in my time here. I've never met more encouraging women anywhere in my travels than in Denver."

FF: "What is the difference between smoking to get high vs. smoking to feel a connection to yourself, others, places, things around you?"
JJ: "Smoking to get high is about escapism. Numbing. Not feeling your pain. Smoking for connection is the exact opposite. It's opening up to your feelings and working through them with a fresh, altered state of mind. It's noticing everything, not checking out. It's turning ON versus turning OFF. I like to be ON, you know?"

FF: "When you source your materials, what is the most important aspect you keep in mind?"
JJ: "In terms of tools and materials in general, they need to be made in the USA. I want to make the smallest carbon footprint I can so purchasing domestic is the number one priority. Next, that the people I purchase from are aligned with me energetically. I know everyone I purchase from, we have long term relationships and I know all of their employees are treated well and paid a fair wage. Then of course for the crystals I choose, it's ALL about the energy. I pick up every single piece that I purchase and feel if it's calling to me. There are a lot of stones that I'll fall in love with visually that I leave behind due to not resonating with it."

FF: "How does smoking from a stone differ from smoking from traditional glass?"
JJ: "Stone has a much denser feel to it, almost everyone who picks one of my pieces up mentions that they much prefer the substantial feel and weight of stone to glass. For me there's just a more natural sense of care for a crystal versus glass so I've never broken a single one of my pipes and have literally said "RIP" to every other piece I've ever owned eventually. I think the natural base resonance frequency that crystals carry due to their nearly perfect and symmetrical atomic geometry actually aligns you and your plant matter as you use it. Humans have such low frequencies as a default in comparison, that crystals will bring our frequency up to theirs... it's a principle in Physics called 'entrainment' that explains this phenomenon."

FF: "What piece have you connected with the most and why?"
JJ: "I made this Raw Citrine pipe after I found out that my Grandfather passed away while I chanted the Hare Krisna mantra for three hours and it felt like a real piece of my heart was deposited into that stone.  I hope whoever has that pipe can feel it."
